| The submersible-study of four segments of the East Pacific Rise between 17 degrees and 18 degrees 40'S, where the spreading rate is greater than 150 mm/a, allows us to confirm the variability of the accretion processes. The segment between 17 degrees and 17 degrees 30'S shows an intense present-day magmatic activity. The one between 18 degrees 10' and 18 degrees 22'S shows a mainly tectonic activity. The segment between 18 degrees 22' and 18 degrees 37'S is an intermediate stage with an axial graben in which fresh lavas were emplaced by an extremely young eruption. On all the segments the hydrothermal activity exists ranging from shimmering water up to black smokers, It is associated with different stages of animal colonization. |

| This paper is a study of the feeding ecology of Macrouridae. After Data on their taxonomy and on the stomach contents, the author gives the results obtained: coefficient of vacuity, indication of a prey frequency, percentage in number and in weight, the mean number of prey per stomach, the mean weight of the prey, the alimentary coefficient of a prey. The diet of every species of Macrouridae and the characteristics of feeding in these species are described. He concludes with considerations on the Macrouridae in the ocean and their geographical distribution, and on the deep feeding chain, especially the trophic role of different groups of preys. | Introduction : Since the discovery of animal communities in oceanic hydrothermal vents in 1977 and in deep-sea cold seeps in 1984 (Londsdale, 1977; Paull et al., 1984) fishes have been regularly observed in association with these chemosynthetically-driven communities, but in most cases they are difficult to catch and therefore species identification can only rely on images taken by the diving vehicles. Ichthyological information pertaining to species inhabiting the deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps is mentioned in over 30 papers and even in the more detailed and updated lists (Geistdoerfer, 1991; 1996; 1999; Sibuet & Olu, 1998; Tunnicliffe, 1991) there are species missing.
